Our intentions were to publish the first of a three-part series on our “Handicap System” however in lieu of launching of the series; I elected to take a swing at the recent golfing extravaganza commercially referred to as The Match. On Friday, November 23rd, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson played a head-to-head match-play event at Shadow Creek Golf Club in Las Vegas, Nevada for a winner-take-all, $9,000,000. The event was broadcast via pay-per-view for $19.99. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson ... continue reading...
Forever Linked
Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson (regarded as two of the very best in the history of the game) were linked together like the flavors of a complex wine. Ben and Byron met when they caddied at Glen Garden Country Club in Fort Worth Texas (nine-hole tract). At the age of fourteen, the two played against each other in the club sponsored caddy tournament where Byron beat Ben by a single stroke in a nine-hole playoff. Upon turning professional, the Hogan’s and the Nelson’s traveled together on the ... continue reading...
Simply Lame
I am not an overtly political or opinionated person. Perhaps it is simply not wanting to share my innermost thoughts, not having any innermost thoughts, not wanting to stir the pot, fear of being judged, being ignorant of the issues, being wrong or being unpopular. There are countless topics worthy of my “opine” such as national security, personal security, financial security and social security, however, the one topic that causes me the greatest consternation is my golfing security as it is ... continue reading...
The Depths of Donegal
Days after Hurricane Lee ravaged south central Pennsylvania in September of 2011; we played The Highlands of Donegal, best described as a links style public course with a reasonable amount of elevation and retention basins/ponds that come into play on ten holes. Highlands was the best option as only a handful of courses were open in the tri-county area. Tee time was 1:10 on a beautiful Friday afternoon, playing with two workmates and a customer. I was adorned in my white Conestoga Country Club ... continue reading...
A Bit Confusing
The 1969 PGA Championship was played August 14th-17th on the South Course of the NCR Country Club in Kettering, Ohio, a suburb of Dayton. The tournament was won by Raymond Floyd, his first of four Majors. In Dan Jenkins book, “Unplayable Lies”, he tells the story of a brief interaction between Dave Marr and “The King,” Arnold Palmer, after the first day (and Arnold’s last day, as he withdrew from the event) of the 1969 PGA Championship. Arnold Palmer, known for his swashbuckling, hard ... continue reading...
From The Commissioner’s Desk
I received an email from a friend of a friend outlining additional “rule changes” that went into effect on October 1, 2018, suggesting that all players ages sixty-five and over shall abide by the new directives. I don’t know about you but I am having trouble keeping up with the ever changing rules landscape (see “Rules of Golf“ a five part post starting in July 2018). Rule 1.k.34 (A): If a tree is between the ball and the hole, and the tree is deemed to be younger than the player, then the ... continue reading...
Captain America
Bad Golf Guy took a bit of a writing hiatus over the past two months, having stockpiled a number of posts in anticipation of foot surgery and a thousand mile move. During my hiatus, I was required to suspend all physical activity including my practice/play thanks to two new screws in my left big toe. Over the same period of time, we were unceremoniously waxed by the Europeans in the 42nd Ryder Cup (if you’ve been following along remember tighter fairways, longer rough and slower ... continue reading...
