I am not an overtly political or opinionated person. Perhaps it is simply not wanting to share my innermost thoughts, not having any innermost thoughts, not wanting to stir the pot, fear of being judged, being ignorant of the issues, being wrong or being unpopular. There are countless topics worthy of my “opine” such as national security, personal security, financial security and social security, however, the one topic that causes me the greatest consternation is my golfing security as it is so tightly bound to those with whom I choose to share my passion, joy, unbridled and unjustified enthusiasm, and at times complete lack of sobriety.
I am a reasonably normal, spoiled guy who plays more than his fair share of golf at a local (mid-level) country club (member for the better part of twenty years, thanks to the generosity of two employers). My Club, now struggling to: keep pace with clubhouse and course maintenance, attracting new membership and retaining current membership.
Disclaimer One:
I do not have firsthand knowledge of the financial condition of My Club however, based on actions, communications, and speculation (gossip) things are challenging.
I am at times critical of housekeeping items such as dirty windows, worn out carpets and buildings that need power washed/painted, etc. As a manager/leader in my business career, I have routinely suggested to my colleagues that being part of an organization (membership) is more than showing up to work each and every day (paying dues), it is about investing time, energy, direction, and resources for the good of the cause. “Please don’t bring me problems without suggestions or solutions.” If you are not willing to invest, not willing to be an agent for positive change, not willing to be an additional hand in the fight for good, you are not permitted to be critical or judgmental.
There you have it, I have officially opined!
Disclaimer Two:
It should be noted that other than paying my dues in a timely manner and driving revenue for My Club (corporate entertainment/outings, greens fees, food/beverage), I have not lifted a finger to support My Club, the very place that has brought such joy to my life. Hence, I have no justification for any form of criticism.
Actually, I have intentionally avoided participating in the management of My Club, suggesting I need an oasis, void of controversy, void of angst, void of agendas, void of dealing with the many egos that are inherent in club politics…sad, pitiful, self-serving excuses! I should have taken a turn at the wheel, assisting in the development and execution of the “Plan”, sharing the successes, sharing the failures. It was simply the right thing to do. I failed My Club and I am embarrassed.
Every club needs volunteers to ease the burden. Consider making an investment in a place that makes you, your family and your friends happy and have no regrets!

Thank you for sharing this perspective. It has made me think about my own current struggle I am having with My Club.
