Golf Golfers US Junior Amateur USGA

Back Nine With Brad McMakin: Part Two

What do you look for in a “Junior” player when you’re recruiting for the University of Arkansas? Recruiting is a difficult process because there are so many really good high school players.  We play in a very competitive conference (SEC). The golf is really strong and our conference produces a number of Tour players.  From a golf standpoint, we look for young men that can drive the golf ball in the fairway (accurate hitters) and can chip and putt. Beyond the playing part, we look to ... continue reading...

Golf Golfers US Junior Amateur

Back Nine With Brad McMakin: Part 1

In mid-July, we traveled to Springfield, New Jersey (my hometown) to watch the second round of the 71st US Junior Amateur (eighteen and under) at Baltusrol Golf Club (see posts “Baltusrol” and “US Junior Amateur…”).  As documented, we had a tremendous front row experience, following our friend, and USGA Rules Official, Paul Romano (“Rules of Golf Part 4 and 5...”).  One of the highlights of our trip was meeting (by dumb luck) and visiting with Brad McMakin, Men’s Golf Coach at the ... continue reading...

The Time Is Near

The plan has been in play for the past couple of years. Upon retirement, the purchase of a new custom-fitted set of either Ping or Taylor Made irons, woods and maybe a rescue or two, thus replacing my tired, yet faithful, old Ping G5’s (born on date: June 27, 2007), sans a six iron (see Bad Golf Guy January 2019 post, “Friend’s, Friend”). It is an exciting time! The anticipation of a personalized club fitting, dedicated time with a certified technician, Trackman data and critical decisions on ... continue reading...

Golf Golf Rules Golf Stories Golfers Just Bad Golf

Friend’s Friend

The old adage suggests that the best jokes are usually about one’s self and I would like to think, based on my shared self-deprecating personal golf experiences, I subscribe to the adage. I am, for a moment, going to gravitate away (just for a brief moment) from my game and my personal calamities to share a story about a fellow unnamed golfer who’s play was significantly better than mine for two straight days. It was a beautiful Friday afternoon in Sarasota, Florida, playing with my brother, ... continue reading...

Golf Golf Rules Handicap System

The Handicap System, Part 2: The Math

Thank you for hanging in there with our information on the Handicap System. As suggested last week, it may come across as a little dry for our non-golfing followers however our more traditional articles (the normal nonsense) will return shortly. Last week we reviewed the fundamentals/concepts, this week we will share the math to calculate your Handicap without utilizing an automated service. Three Steps:  1.  Total your score(s) using the “Adjusted Gross Score” ... continue reading...
