In May of 2024, the United States Golf Association (USGA) and the World Golf Hall of Fame (WGHOF) collaborated to open a state-of-the-art museum at 3 Carolina Vista Drive in Pinehurst, North Carolina. The well-traveled WGHOF museum, which is located on a seven-acre site on Pinehurst Country Club’s sprawling campus, was previously located in St. Augustine, Florida. The museum returns to Pinehurst where it was originally founded in 1974. The building/ architecture and its contents are a welcome addition to our golf crazed community.
The collaboration, which celebrates golf’s greatest players and contributors, brought two distinct collections together as the USGA donated unique items from older players while the WGHOF provided memorabilia from more recent players.
Player Qualifications:
- Minimum of forty-five years of age
- Five years removed from active competition
- Fifteen or more wins on Approved Tours and/or two Major wins
The most popular exhibit in the WGHOF exhibit in Florida was the Locker Room, which Pinehurst has recreated with 160 player/contributor lockers. The lockers house extraordinary artifacts that paint a picture of each players/contributor’s personality and stellar careers.
During a recent conversation with a neighbor/friend, Tom asked an intriguing question; “What’s in your locker?” Due to the enormity and unparalleled success of my sixty-year golfing career, I struggled to provide an immediate, succinct response as my head began to fill with countless memories and experiences with family, friends as well as spectacular properties.
After thoughtful reflection, I have accumulated my personal WGHOF locker collection:
- A handful of range tokens, as I am affectionately known as the quintessential range “hound.”
- A pair of white Foot-Joy golf shoes as I have only worn Foot-Joy’s and I have only worn white Foot-Joy’s, which is an ode to Billy “White Shoes” Johnson
- Galloping Hill Golf Course (Kenilworth, NJ), Baltusrol Golf Club (Springfield, NJ) and Conestoga County Club (Lancaster, PA) scorecards. Galloping Hill was my first golf course, Baltusrol is where I caddied as a teenager and Conestoga was my club in Pennsylvania for countless years.
- Conestoga Country Club black head cover
- Bad Golf Guy sticker
- Higher Purpose Heads bottle opener
- Group picture of my life-long golfing mates/friends (John, Dave, Jim, Joe and Abe)
- Bag Tags (USGA/Pledge to Walk)
- King Cobra oversize Ti Titanium driver with a 10.5-degree loft (circa 1996)
- Seven “Eagle” balls. My last eagle was in July 2009.
- 1st Place medal (2024 Pinehurst #6 POA Scramble. I was the “C” player on our four-man team)
- Flight Runner-Up commemorative painting (2019 Country Club of York Member-Guest. I was the “B” player on our two-man team)
- Hole-in-One plaque (Conestoga Country Club, June 26, 2007, 11th hole, 153 yards, 7 iron)
- American Cancer Society fundraiser scorecard – 13 rounds in one day
- Conklin Players Club scorecard (77 on 7/15/06, six birdies, six bogeys, one double, one triple), white tees, rating/slope (69.5/121)
- Conklin Players Club scorecard (73 on 10/4/07, one eagle, two birdies, five bogeys), white tees, rating/slope (69.5/121). I bet you didn’t see that coming!
In the event I am perceived as a bit of a braggart based on my vast accomplishments, I sincerely apologize, however, this is my WGHOF locker and I need be celebrated! There is a time and a place for humility, however this is certainly not one of those moments!
What’s in your locker?
Thank you for following Bad Golf Guy. The back nine can only get better!
