Well, it is the beginning of August and it is time to share month two’s (July Results) results, documenting my “holistic” approach (aerobic activity, weight training, practice, play, diet, etc.), to improve my overall golfing experience (see Committed and I Should Be Committed).
Before we get to the numbers, let me first say that I am an idiot and this little experiment was the most lamebrain, numbskull, cockamamie idea I have had in quite some time…and that’s sayin’ something!
Having retired at the end of December, other than periodically carrying my bag for a late afternoon round, my aerobic activity was minimal at best, preferring to engage The Shed’s Wednesday’s $1.35 Yuengling Lager Day and quite frankly, any other “Day” I could find. My weight was gravitating in a northerly direction, fast!
After an early March visit from my brother and my Pennsylvania golfing buddies, I decided to take action, needing to change some habits. With the encouragement and assistance from my wife, I started eating better, eating less, taking a pass on snacks and making a point to get to the gym to utilize the elliptical machine and weight equipment. In addition, in late June, I started working three, six-hour shifts each week on the golf course, helping our Superintendent with various tasks, often physical in nature.
Fast forward to late July, between our own yard work, working on the golf course in Florida’s heat and humidity, frequent visits to the range, playing golf and going to the gym (sweating buckets each and every day) my weight is at a much better place. To drive that point home, my yard shorts recently slid off of my hips in the middle of our front yard.
So, after two months of heightened activity, not to mention some guilt for occasionally not sticking to my workout regimen, I have drawn the conclusion that my golf game is just not that important to me. I’M OUT!! No more monitoring of activities, no more spreadsheets and no more trips to the gym when I really don’t want to go! I will be far more comfortable with a “halflistic” approach (whatever that means) to improve my overall golfing experience!
Truth be told, I have lived my entire adult life as a marginal golfer however that hasn’t and won’t keep me from trying to improve until my last breath. More than ever, I feel as if I have the tools to do so, but my clock is ticking. I would like the process to to be fun, regardless of the results, not a job!
If you are enjoying our weekly posts, we’d be eternally grateful if you’d spread the word. Thank you for following Bad Golf Guy and be sure to check us out on Instagram.
The back nine can only get better!
