In March of 2018 we posted an article, My Nemesis, the story of my abysmal performances in Member-Guest tournaments. Performances so pathetic that I placed a temporary hold on accepting any and all invitations requiring some level of competition.
After a year and a half hiatus, I am back on my horse at the 52nd Naperville Country Club Invitational in Naperville, Illinois. The Invitational is a first class, three-day Member-Guest event with twelve Flights and seventy-two, two man teams. There are six teams in a Flight, each team plays five nine hole matches within the Flight to determine the Flight winner. The twelve Flight winners then battle it out in an elimination style Shoot-Out to determine the overall Invitational Champion.
In the past, my brother (my host) and I were always hopeful however we routinely finished in the bottom of our flight and occasionally the bottom of the entire field. This year there is a bit more pressure on my performance due to my recent holistic approach to my golfing journey (see Committed and I Should Be Committed), new clubs, an improved swing and a few encouraging scores. In addition, over the past 45 days I have made 26 trips to our practice facility, including dedicated time on the short range, practice putting green and driving range.
I have never been more prepared to help our team crawl out of the proverbial cellar. My clubs are spotless, my shoes are shined, my Titleist Pro-V golf balls are all marked with two solid orange lines and my bags are packed and ready to go.
We are playing in the eighth Flight (Tralee Flight) and our team has the lowest combined Handicap (24.7) within our six team Flight. Our competitors combined Handicaps are 25.1, 25.1, 26.1, 26.2 and 26.5, which makes for a very competitive situation. There are three players in our Flight with individual Handicaps of 7.5, 8.1 and 9-. In addition, there are three other players with individual Handicaps of 17.1, 17.6 and 18.1…all with strokes!
So there you have it! Next Sunday we will post our results. We are accepting well wishes.

Jim you will do very well. I have no doubts. How that stacks up against the field remains to be seen.
Not a slight on your brother. I am sure he is as competitive as you are and as athletic as well. Good luck. Can’t wait to hear how you fared.
