A Year In Review

Having retired roughly a year ago, I thought it would be therapeutic to review my first year in Florida as a retiree. Employment:  Truth be told, I do not miss the work; the responsibilities or the commitment.  I do not miss chasing the numbers, needing to continually increase revenues, continually control expenses and continually increase the bottom line.  If there was ever a time I thought I was somewhat relevant in the workplace, retirement dispelled the ... continue reading...

Things That Make Me Smile

Blades Down – Atta Boy

As a manager during my professional years, it took me longer than it should have to recognize that many of my colleagues came to work each and every day, laden with burdens that impacted their ability to perform at optimum levels.  As I gradually began to understand the dynamics, I was personally embarrassed; having never really given it much thought, assuming everyone’s life was just as fabulous as mine!  Better late than never, I am hopeful I became more sensitive and empathetic to ... continue reading...

The Troubles

Early on in life, our mother impressed upon her children the importance of being clean, tidy and dressed appropriately for all situations.  Shined shoes, pressed shirts/pants and the occasional double Windsor were the order of the day.   Her guidance/direction/actions extended to all aspects of our existence including such disciplines as the daily vacuuming of our carpets, ironed bed sheets, routinely practicing manners at the dinner table, never, and I mean never, touching the woodwork and the ... continue reading...

Blades Down – Make Me Proud

I hate to brag, however, my advancement on the Grounds Crew of a Top 100 (public) golf facility has been nothing short of meteoric.  Progressing from such tasks as filling divots, collecting debris, rough mowing and cutting cups, I was delighted when I was asked to meet Curtis on our Short Course.  When I finally caught up with Curtis, a personable fellow, he was in the throes of mowing the sixth green, sitting on top of a Toro Greensmaster Triaxle 3150, arguably one of the most ... continue reading...

Blades Down – Star On The Rise II

Similar to my early days on the caddie rail at Baltusrol Golf Club, waiting patiently for my first loop, I've bided my time, waiting patiently for a more significant assignment beyond filling/leveling divots and collecting debris.  I have been comfortable paying my dues, earning my keep, proving my salt and showing management that I am reliable, punctual, trustworthy and responsible with their equipment! Surprisingly enough, it didn’t take terribly long until I was on top of one of our two ... continue reading...
