Bad Golf Guy has been sharing weekly stories for the past two and a half years. Our objective is to entertain family, friends and our loyal followers with mostly self-deprecating nonsense that is somewhat relatable to our vast golfing community. Toiling in relative anonymity, things changed dramatically a few Sunday’s ago. Hanging out at one of our favorite pubs in Inverness, Florida, The Side Bar (formerly known as The Tipsy Turtle), Brain and Randy hunkered down on the adjacent bar stools. ... continue reading...
Dees Am Some Strange Times
There is nothing quite like a little world-wide pandemic to flush out the particulars of my social life, which includes such activities as hanging out with my wife, our family, our friends, playing golf, watching sports and drinking beer. My adult pastimes have been significantly influenced by childhood experiences, such as watching my parents and their neighbors hoot it up at our kitchen table; consuming such delicacies as pickled pigs feet/pigs knuckles/herring and limburger cheese, visiting ... continue reading...
The Loop at Forest Dunes
While researching Bad Golf Guy’s Top 50 Golf Course Names (“Old Fiddlesticks”), I was intrigued when I stumbled upon the name of a course in Roscommon, Michigan called the The Loop, which opened in 2016. The Loop was designed by Tom Doak, a familiar name, as Doak designed two courses (the Old Course and the North Course) at Stonewall, in Elverson, PA. I have been fortunate to play Stonewall on numerous occasions, hosted by our good friends (Joe and Shelby) who have been members for years. ... continue reading...
Old Fiddlesticks
Recently, I was visiting with my brother, sharing a few Smithwick’s after a marginal round of golf. During our conversation, John mentioned a course in Fort Myers, Florida named Fiddlesticks Country Club. I chuckled, reflected for a moment and commented that “Fiddlesticks Country Club” is an amazing name for a golf course! Our conversation got me thinking about other great golf course names within the United States. After spending the better part of a day reviewing a sampling of the names of ... continue reading...
Blades Down – What’s In My Bag
Golf magazine’s monthly segment, “What’s in My Bag” goes under the hood, documenting the contents of PGA Tour player’s golf bags including the make and model of their drivers, fairway woods, irons, putters and shafts as well as their specific preferences of golf balls, tees, Sharpie marker colors, divot tools, head covers, shoes, ditty bags, hats, sunglasses, training aides and over the counter pain medications. I thought it appropriate to document the contents of another type of bag…my black ... continue reading...
Blades Down – A Dangerous Combination
The relationship between the Grounds Crew and the Maintenance Department (“Shop”) is a truly fascinating dynamic. The Grounds Crew cannot function without the support of the Shop, while the Shop would cease to exist without the Grounds Crew. The Grounds Crew can be critical of the Shop relative to the maturity and performance of the equipment while the Shop can be critical of the Grounds Crew, insinuating a cavalier approach to the care and operation of the mature equipment. Having lived in ... continue reading...
The Three Best Things I Witnessed at the Sea Best Invitational
We recently attended the Sea Best Invitational in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, a Division 1 Collegiate Golf Tournament (“Sea Best Invitational at TPC at Sawgrass”), which hosted fourteen teams and eighty-four participants. We had a great day watching some of the finest amateurs in the world, with (more or less) full access to an absolute iconic property. In addition to watching some outstanding golf on the Dye’s Valley Course, there were three individual occurrences that warrant special ... continue reading...
