My social life and sense of community have been enriched by my life-long love affair with local drinking establishments and the many charismatic, humorous, entertaining personalities behind the bar: special mention to Pete, Peg, Willi, Renate, Claude, Bean and Sarah. Rich’s, Annville Hotel, Gin Mill, Watering Trough, Black Horse Hotel, Lincoln House, the Spot, Bitzer’s Hotel, Peanut Bar, special mention to the Lancaster Liederkranz, Stubby’s, Valentino’s, The Shed and Pine Street Pub (on Pine ... continue reading...
Do No Damage (Story #2, c1971)
This story, which follows “Spare Parts”, will conclude a few of my high school basketball experiences. Thanks for hanging in there! It was late in the season of my junior-year. The Jonathan Dayton Regional High School Bulldogs were undefeated in conference play, heading into the next-to- last game of our first year in the Suburban Conference. We were frequently reminded by Coach Yanchus that no team in the long history of the Suburban Conference had ever gone undefeated in conference play. ... continue reading...
Spare Parts
On the heels of a story about my high school basketball coach (“My Coach”), I thought it best to stick with a consistent theme for our next two monthly posts. On a recent trip to my favorite watering hole (Maxie’s) in Pinehurst, North Carolina, I found myself sharing two high school basketball stories with regular patrons, Jeff and Will. Stories so deeply rooted in my subconscious and so traumatic, they took fifty-two years to surface. Story #1 (Circa 1970): Basketball has been a life-long ... continue reading...
My Coach
Background: With the exception of my father, my high school basketball coach (Ray Yanchus) has been the most influential male in my life. Simply stated, he made me a better teammate, a tougher competitor, a much better player and a far better person. His confidence, his unrelenting conviction, his commitment to excellence, his lofty standards and his unwavering beliefs, mixed with his Marine mentality, made for a compelling presentation. Many lessons were taught and most lessons were ... continue reading...
Maniac Hill

Maniac Hill, America’s first driving range, was founded in 1913 by Donald Ross for the sole purpose of practicing golf, replacing centuries-old Scottish playing lessons. An estimated ten-million golf balls are struck annually at Maniac Hill! Maniac Hill Landmark: The Pinehurst practice range was ... continue reading...
Merry Christmas

Pinehurst, NC
Having moved four years ago, from Lancaster, Pennsylvania to Homosassa, Florida, we recently made a life-changing decision to move one more time (and hopefully the final time) to Pinehurst, North Carolina. Before we explain the logic, or lack of logic behind the Pinehurst decision, one might ask, why in the world would anyone voluntarily move to Homosassa, Florida (a.k.a. “this godforsaken place” …a family quote that will live on in infamy). Briefly, my parents retired to Homosassa ... continue reading...
