On Saturday evening, after completion of the foursome/four ball matches and on the eve of the singles matches, both Captains are required to submit a sealed envelope to Ryder Cup officials. Enclosed within each envelope is the name of one player on each twelve man roster. This contingency plan addresses circumstances (i.e. sickness/injury) that would prevent a player from competing in the singles matches, simultaneously eliminating a non-sick/injured player from the opposing team. Both ... continue reading...
Willi Zodet
I was thinking about my friend the other day on his birthday, reminiscing about the origin of our relationship. The story makes me smile! As a relatively new member of the Lancaster Liederkranz (a German social club in Lancaster, PA), I was anxious to make new friends and begin to embrace the organizations fraternal spirit. The Monday/Friday afternoon bartender was Willi Zodet. Willi; born in Germany, served in its military, found his way to the United States, traveled the country in a new Ford ... continue reading...
US Adaptive Open
On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (July 10th-12th) the 2nd Annual US Adaptive Open will be held for the second consecutive year at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club’s Course #6, in Pinehurst, NC. As residents of the Pinehurst #6 community, and as an employee of Pinehurst #6 (Grounds Crew), this is a big deal! The following story details my experiences at the 2022 US Adaptive Open. It was Thursday, four days prior to the start of the inaugural U.S. Adaptive Open, hosted by Pinehurst Resort ... continue reading...
David Feherty
In early April, I had the good fortune to be invited to attend a “David Feherty-Live Off Tour” performance at Sandhills Community College, in Southern Pines, NC. It was an intimate affair inside Owens Auditorium with approximately three-hundred patrons in attendance. The set was not dissimilar to David’s “Feherty” television show, inclusive of a Persian rug, a desk, a comfortable leather chair and a credenza; adorned with a stuffed chicken and a framed photograph of his wife; Anita. The ... continue reading...

My social life and sense of community have been enriched by my life-long love affair with local drinking establishments and the many charismatic, humorous, entertaining personalities behind the bar: special mention to Pete, Peg, Willi, Renate, Claude, Bean and Sarah. Rich’s, Annville Hotel, Gin Mill, Watering Trough, Black Horse Hotel, Lincoln House, the Spot, Bitzer’s Hotel, Peanut Bar, special mention to the Lancaster Liederkranz, Stubby’s, Valentino’s, The Shed and Pine Street Pub (on Pine ... continue reading...
Do No Damage (Story #2, c1971)
This story, which follows “Spare Parts”, will conclude a few of my high school basketball experiences. Thanks for hanging in there! It was late in the season of my junior-year. The Jonathan Dayton Regional High School Bulldogs were undefeated in conference play, heading into the next-to- last game of our first year in the Suburban Conference. We were frequently reminded by Coach Yanchus that no team in the long history of the Suburban Conference had ever gone undefeated in conference play. ... continue reading...
Spare Parts
On the heels of a story about my high school basketball coach (“My Coach”), I thought it best to stick with a consistent theme for our next two monthly posts. On a recent trip to my favorite watering hole (Maxie’s) in Pinehurst, North Carolina, I found myself sharing two high school basketball stories with regular patrons, Jeff and Will. Stories so deeply rooted in my subconscious and so traumatic, they took fifty-two years to surface. Story #1 (Circa 1970): Basketball has been a life-long ... continue reading...
