I recently completed Mark Frost’s classic The Match. A beautifully constructed tale (with countless historical references) chronicling an eighteen-hole match, played at Cypress Point in 1956, between professionals Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson and amateurs Ken Venturi and Harvie Ward. A must read for anyone interested in the history of golf. On page 173, Frost references Marion Hollins, the 1921 US Women’s Amateur Champion and the founder of Cypress Point, commonly referred to as the “Sistine ... continue reading...
The Morning After
This link (click HERE) tells the story of Steve Politi, a reporter for the New Jersey Star-Ledger and NJ.com, winning the press lottery to play Augusta National the Monday following the 2018 Masters tournament. As an aside, the Star-Ledger is the same morning publication that, as kids, my brother and I would wage war over in the driveway for the rights to read the sports section during breakfast. Steve's article reminds me of Maureen McGovern's 1972 smash hit "The Morning After", the theme to ... continue reading...
Functionality
Over the past ten to fifteen years, I have noticed subtle/gradual “functionality” changes...nothing dramatic however the sum total of the years and corresponding changes has certainly caught my attention. The changes have been self-observed; no one in my formative years gave me a heads-up regarding the new landscape. As I recall, there were no self-help books titled: “I Didn’t See This Coming” or “Things You Need to Know”. The information would have been helpful however, the down side may have ... continue reading...
Whirling Dervish
I have subscribed to Golf Magazine for years. My typical ritual is to pull the magazine out of the mailbox, remove the advertising inserts and carefully place the magazine in a special section of my briefcase to save for my next flight. Sometimes I have three or four fresh editions ready to go! One of my favorite articles is “Ask the Rules Guy”, a humorous, insightful approach to subscriber situations that require interpretation. The following situation was reviewed in the April 2018 ... continue reading...
A Watchful Eye
Country Club of York Hole #15/471 Yards/Par 5: Mid-summer round with two of my best golfing buddies, dry conditions, minimal alcohol consumption. Reasonably short, dogleg left with a significantly elevated tee box, tree line guarding the entire left side, bunkering guarding the right side. My tee ball (ball #1) was a short, high, pop-up barely reaching the corner of the dogleg. Did it make it past the turn to safety or did it get swallowed up by the tree goblins?! Hope was not springing ... continue reading...
Single Length Irons, Part 3: “The Back Nine” with Dave Lynch
How were you introduced to single length irons? Local golf teaching professional, John Sokolowski, engaged his friend Frank Stranick (owner of FS Golf) to host a single length iron “Demo Day” in late May of 2017. Prior to the demo day, did you have any knowledge or interest, in the concept? I have been interested in the concept for years as I follow the PGA Tour and Bryson DeChambeau. I love to play golf and I really love to play golf with new equipment. I was already hooked/convinced ... continue reading...
Single Length Irons, Part 2: “The Back Nine” with Frank Stranick
This was to be a reasonably brief “Back Nine” session with Frank Stranick, owner of FS Golf in Gilbertsville, PA, to compliment a series of articles on single length irons. Shortly after my arrival and tour of his immaculate and expansive club making shop and his equally immaculate and high-tech club fitting area, I quickly recognized that my time with Frank was going to be far more interesting than expected. Frank is polite, professional, friendly, articulate, proud and based on the numerous ... continue reading...
