I apologize once again for drifting away from golf related themes/stories however there are certain situations/circumstances that necessitate the “drift”! At my advanced age, it is increasingly difficult to find meaningful, thoughtful, even pragmatic gifts for my wife that fit within the constraints of our rather meager Christmas budget. My strategy is pretty simple. I attempt to pay attention during the year; listening and accumulating potential clues/ideas. Inevitably, without accumulating ... continue reading...
Rarified Air II
At 10:47 on Sunday morning, shortly after our last Bad Golf Guy post, my Lebanon Valley College roommate, teammate and seemingly life-long friend (Whitey) responded, and I quote; “At first, when I read “Rarified Air”, I thought you were going to share the story about the recruiting visit and East College. My response was clear and concise; “I am not willing to tarnish our impeccable reputations by telling such a tale!” After further consideration, reputations be damned! The story begins during ... continue reading...
Rarified Air
My college roommate/teammate/seemingly life-long friend (Whitey) recently reminded me of a story that occurred in 1976, forty-eight years ago! A story I have shared countless times throughout the years with anyone who would listen. Although unrelated to golf, the story is a deserving contribution to our Bad Golf Guy memoirs. Winding down my final season as a member of Lebanon Valley College’s Flying Dutchmen basketball team, my teammates and I were hosting the vaulted Gettysburg College ... continue reading...
The MBGA
Press Release: Pinehurst, NC (December 11th, 2022 - 9:45 am) – A special meeting of the “MBGA” was held at Maxie’s Grill and Tap Room to induct the organizations newest member; Jim Schoch. In attendance, Jim White (President), Dan Bowman (Vice-President) and Jim “Hambone” Hermann (Treasurer). It is almost inconceivable that after one short year of living in the Pinehurst community, I was formally inducted into, may I say; a prestigious, may I also say; an elite organization, not dissimilar to ... continue reading...
Too Good To Be True, Part 2
The Shoot-Out is a bit of an intimidating affair with twelve teams and approximately 75-100 spectators on hand; playing two holes, alternate shot, to determine the final four teams to advance to the concluding elimination holes. Amazingly, I was not terribly nervous as we approached the first tee box. It may have had something to do with the celebratory shot and two pints! We played solid golf with a net par on both holes. John executed two tidy pitch shots to set the table. Unfortunately, we ... continue reading...
To Good To Be True
Part One My track record in 3-Day Member-Guest tournaments is somewhat legendary; as documented in a previous Bad Golf Guy post (“My Nemesis”). My brother (John) and I typically struggle to stay out of the cellar of these sixty-team events; never, ever, sniffing the all-important Shoot-Out which determines the tournaments overall Champion. John, who has developed into a very consistent player through the years, was once again, kind enough to invite me to his fall 3-Day Member-Guest at his home ... continue reading...
The Gimmie
“A gimmie is when a traffic cop pulls you over and only gives you a warning, or when a grocery clerk honors your expired coupon without price checking your adult Depends over the grocery store microphone.” The Art of the Gimmie by Mick Kemper More specifically to the game of golf, and far less humorous, a gimmie putt (“give me”) is a time saving measure where short putts are conceded and counted when considered unmissable; typically, “within the leather” (the distance between the bottom of the ... continue reading...
