Bad Golf Guy took a bit of a writing hiatus over the past two months, having stockpiled a number of posts in anticipation of foot surgery and a thousand mile move. During my hiatus, I was required to suspend all physical activity including my practice/play thanks to two new screws in my left big toe. Over the same period of time, we were unceremoniously waxed by the Europeans in the 42nd Ryder Cup (if you’ve been following along remember tighter fairways, longer rough and slower ... continue reading...
Making Friends
A number of years ago, I wrote the following story for my personal business “memoirs” about an experience at a high-end/world-class golf facility, across the Mason-Dixon Line. The type of experience that compels you to share the details with your friends, your colleagues and anyone remotely interested in the “customer experience“. In addition, the type of experience that can only be embellished as it passes from one to another. In March, I hosted a three-day out-of-town business/golf ... continue reading...
Stonewall
Early Sunday morning round at Stonewall (Elverson, PA) on the Old Course with my great buddy; a real treat! We had the first tee time of 7:35, escorted by our energetic, polite, enthusiastic caddy, Aaron. Stonewall is a private club with two Tom Doak designed courses; the Old Course (walking only) and the North Course (carts permitted). I have been fortunate to play the Old Course a number of times however I have only played the North Course once, many years ago. The Old Course is a real ... continue reading...
The Move
Mr. and Mrs. Bad Golf Guy are soon on the move, retiring from our day jobs, heading south, chasing warmer weather, year round golf and an occasional unsuspecting fish! The move has been part of my plan for countless years however the stark reality of the actual event has me a bit unglued. I can bore you with the obvious (fixed income, social security, health insurance, medicare, stock market, etc.) however what really has me out of sorts is leaving my friends and maintaining our relationships ... continue reading...
Attend the Ryder Cup? No Thanks.
I have been fortunate to have attended my fair share of big time sporting events/venues; Duke/UNC, Notre Dame/Florida State, The Masters, US Open's, PGA’s, US Junior Amateur, Yankee Stadium, Fenway Park and Wrigley Field and Heinz Stadium. I have also been known to say through the years that I have absolutely no interest in ever attending my favorite sporting event, the Ryder Cup. Fifty something thousand people ascending on four morning and four afternoon matches, thirty-forty deep? No ... continue reading...
The Shot
The final pairing of the 67th US Open (June 18, 1967) at iconic Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, NJ matched Jack Nicklaus and rival Arnold Palmer. Jack held a four shot lead (-4) over Arnie (E) as they approached the 542 yard par five, 18th hole. In addition to chasing his second US Open title and his 7th Major Championship at the age of twenty-seven, Nicklaus was in hot pursuit of the US Open scoring record (276) held by Ben Hogan since 1948 (Riviera Club, Los Angeles/7,020 yards, par 72). ... continue reading...
US Junior Amateur; Part Two
As you recall, we pulled into Baltusrol at 7:25 am, the pageantry of a typical PGA Tour event was evident and yet everything (except for the quality of play and the conduct of the players) was different. We parked no more than 200 yards from the main gate...FREE! We headed to the main gate and there was…no one. Not even security! Admission was FREE! We walked through Baltusrol’s Pro Shop (the actual Pro Shop, not a tent). There were fifteen people in the building, including the ... continue reading...
