In the early stages of a recent range session with Francis (friend-coach-mentor), he paused, massaged his chin, thought for a moment and succinctly stated, “The problem with the results from your swing is that there is no certainty.” I have heard: flawed, erratic, inconsistent, unreliable, “Wizard of Oz thing going on back there” to describe the action/results of my golf swing but by no means have I ever have heard the term “certainty” to describe the action/results of my golf swing. ... continue reading...
The 15th Major
Happy Easter! On Sunday afternoon, watching Tiger snuggle one up on the 16th hole of The Masters at Augusta National Golf Club, virtually sealing the deal (a truly amazing day in the history of golf), I reflected on my love for sports and my love for special moments in sports. Attempting to sort out the genesis of my affections, a flood of memories and experiences immediately filled my soul. It may have all started by hanging out in the kitchen with my Mom while she ironed my father’s shirts ... continue reading...
Behind the Counter: Pundit at 28.5553ºN/82.3879ºW
As I have mentioned in previous posts, we recently moved to Florida. No real surprises other than stumbling into and sprinting (well, maybe more of a slow jog) away from two snakes of undetermined origin and eight to ten early morning temperatures in the low 30’s. The latter being a bit problematic for my early morning outdoor showers! (And yes, this is a choice. We do have indoor plumbing.) I was scheduled to work (Behind the Counter) on the first of our cold mornings. As is my routine, I ... continue reading...
Can We Get a Rules Official Over Here?
Playing the ninth hole of our second round of the day (413 yard par four, slight dogleg left, needing to carry a large pond off of the tee box towards a two tiered green) with brother John and friends Joe and Dave, I confidently approached my tee ball as I was playing far better than expected, four over par through eight with a double bogey on the sixth hole. Unfortunately, I pushed my drive to the right side, into a small grove of trees, some 210 yards from the pin, with no realistic shot ... continue reading...
Half Cocked
I am not a PGA touring professional, I am not a PGA instructor and I am not the guy that shares swing-thought nuggets with friends and business associates during a round. Heck, I can barely get off the tee box myself! I am known as “Bad Golf Guy” and there are numerous self-deprecating posts to substantiate the moniker. I have struggled with inconsistency for as long as I can remember, firing a round in the low eighties one day and scorching the same tract with a mid to high-nineties round ... continue reading...
On The Inside
On March 14th, I had the good fortune to caddie for PGA Professional David Denlinger, from Lancaster, PA (who will soon be competing in his third season on the PGA Tour LatinoAmerica) at a Valspar Golf Championship Qualifier at Southern Hills Plantation Club in Brooksville, FL. Southern Hills Plantation is a Pete Dye design, which played 7,557 yards with a Course Rating of 76.7 and a Slope Rating of 145. The Valspar Golf Championship’s final round is today (March 24th) at Innisbrook’s ... continue reading...
Behind The Counter – John Sokolowski
Last week we shared the story (“Behind the Counter”) of my post-retirement role at a local golf course with national and international notoriety. Within moments of our post, our good friend and loyal follower, John Sokolowski, an outstanding teaching professional at the Highlands of Donegal in Mount Joy, PA responded with a few of his “Behind the Counter” experiences in Texas. John, thank you for your contribution, get well and we will see you in May! Staff: Golf course, may I ... continue reading...
