As a counterman for a public golf course, I have numerous and varied responsibilities, including but not limited to answering the phone, scheduling advanced tee times, cancelling existing tee times, answering questions, maintaining the appearance and order of the Pro Shop, cleaning windows, cheerfully greeting our patrons, checking our patrons into the system, determining the appropriate rate for play (as suggested in a previous article, 98 options), accepting cash/credit card payments and ... continue reading...
Trackman
I was nosing around the Trackman website, attempting to gain an understanding of the twenty-three individual metrics from a recent hour long session with Terry Hanson of the Florida Golf Performance Center in Sarasota, Florida. What I do know, after leaving the Performance Center, is that Trackman (and its competitors) has eliminated any form of guesswork; the information is instantaneous and the data indisputable. I also learned that, “Club Face”, “Angle of Attack” and “Club Path” are the ... continue reading...
Banish the Demons of Doubt
In Mark Frost’s gem, “The Match: The Day the Game Changed Forever” the story of a clandestine match at Cypress Point between professionals Ben Hogan/Byron Nelson and amateurs Harvie Ward/Ken Venturi, Mark shares details of Ben Hogan’s early challenges on the professional circuit. Ben was a tireless worker however the fruit of his labors were not paying dividends at a time when his Texan contemporaries (Bryon Nelson, Jimmy Demaret, Ralph Guldahl and Lloyd Mangrum) were garnering big wins and ... continue reading...
I Lost a Friend
I met John W. Sokolowski at the Highlands of Donegal Golf Course in Mount Joy, Pennsylvania. John, PGA golfing instructor at the Highlands from 2014-2018, was a tall, fit and friendly fellow, always with a smile, always with a few questions about my game and always with an encouraging word. A golfing advocate, wanting to help players play better and to simply have better golfing experiences. John was born in Massachusetts, graduating from the University of Massachusetts, then serving four ... continue reading...
Seeking Certainty
In the early stages of a recent range session with Francis (friend-coach-mentor), he paused, massaged his chin, thought for a moment and succinctly stated, “The problem with the results from your swing is that there is no certainty.” I have heard: flawed, erratic, inconsistent, unreliable, “Wizard of Oz thing going on back there” to describe the action/results of my golf swing but by no means have I ever have heard the term “certainty” to describe the action/results of my golf swing. ... continue reading...
The 15th Major
Happy Easter! On Sunday afternoon, watching Tiger snuggle one up on the 16th hole of The Masters at Augusta National Golf Club, virtually sealing the deal (a truly amazing day in the history of golf), I reflected on my love for sports and my love for special moments in sports. Attempting to sort out the genesis of my affections, a flood of memories and experiences immediately filled my soul. It may have all started by hanging out in the kitchen with my Mom while she ironed my father’s shirts ... continue reading...
Behind the Counter: Pundit at 28.5553ºN/82.3879ºW
As I have mentioned in previous posts, we recently moved to Florida. No real surprises other than stumbling into and sprinting (well, maybe more of a slow jog) away from two snakes of undetermined origin and eight to ten early morning temperatures in the low 30’s. The latter being a bit problematic for my early morning outdoor showers! (And yes, this is a choice. We do have indoor plumbing.) I was scheduled to work (Behind the Counter) on the first of our cold mornings. As is my routine, I ... continue reading...
