I was listening to the 60’s channel on Sirius Radio early in the week when “Time Is On My Side” by the Rolling Stones came streaming across the airways. The song was written by Norman Meade (a.k.a. Jerry Ragovoy) and was first recorded by jazz trombonist Kai Winding and his orchestra in 1963. As much as I enjoy the tune, annoyingly, it stuck with me for days!
Fast forward, a little later in the week, we were visiting with our friends and golf buddies (Doug and Do) at The Shed on the Homosassa River, sipping away on a few $1.35 brewskis on Yuengling Lager Wednesday! Somehow, also somewhat annoyingly (just kidding), our conversation gravitated to my less than dependable golf swing.
During the course of our conversation, my wife mentioned a few details surrounding our June 2018 visit with celebrated golf author James (Jim) Dodson and his wife Wendy (see: More Than A Game). Erin shared one of Jim’s nuggets: “A golf swing lasts roughly two-seconds. Two-seconds, multiplied by ninety swings, equals one-hundred and eighty-seconds or three-minutes. An average round of golf lasts four-hours, leaving three-hours and fifty-seven minutes for fellowship.”
Last evening, with “Time Is On My Side” still in residency, I was mulling over Jim’s nugget; questioning the validity of his hypothesis. Did Jim not feel compelled to take into account my three-hours and forty-five minutes of self-doubt, negative images, over-analysis and a continuous flood of swing thoughts, which, based on my calculations, leaves a solid twelve-minutes for actual fellowship!
So, in this situation, having time on my side is far more of a curse than a blessing!
