Over the past month or two, I have been giving a lot of thought to my golfing journey; past, present and what I would like it to be in the future.
Past: Other than entertaining clients, virtually 100% of my golfing experiences have been with my brother and two friends (John, Dave and Joe) or by myself. I am blessed to have three great golfing buddies in my life who are tolerant of my inadequacies both on and off the course and who are willing to share their time and their love for the game. It is a very special bond. In addition, I had the opportunity to play and practice on a weekly basis, meaningful instruction was not in the mix, consequently my play was incredibly erratic and inconsistent. Due to my anemic performance is social events (i.e. member-guests, see “My Nemesis”), I placed a temporary hold on accepting any and all invitations.
Present: Now, one-thousand miles away from my brother and friends, meaningful instruction is in the mix (thanks to Francis and John), practice is frequent, however play is periodic and typically no more than nine holes in a week’s time. The social aspect of my golfing journey is as anemic as my past performance in social events, missing my golfing soulmates, somewhat reluctant to engage potential new golfing friends, finding it easier to play/practice by myself.
Future: I aspire to improve the social aspect of my golfing life, finding a few additional folks with whom I can enjoy the highs and lows of our four hour voyage. Additionally, I aspire to improve the consistency of my ball striking (see “Seeking Certainty”) to more thoroughly enjoy all aspects of my experiences and possibly reconsider my current stance on golfing social events.
Commitment: Starting June 1st, for a three to four month period, I plan to approach my quest holistically, committing to frequent practice, more frequent play and periodic instruction. To compliment my golfing activities, new clubs and a summer membership to Southern Hills Plantation in Brooksville, FL I plan to engage a fitness regimen to include aerobic exercise and weight training. Simultaneously, I will look for opportunities to play with my “Behind the Counter” colleagues and possibly a men’s golfing group.
Over the next few months, I will chart and share the progress of the following metrics:
- GHIN Index
- Weight
- Fitness Results (Cardio/Weights)
- Pushup Count
- Frequency of Practice
- Frequency of Play with Scores/Slope Ratings/Course Ratings
- Frequency of Instruction
- Daily Alcoholic Consumption
- Frequency of Playing with Others
- Diet
So there you have it! Writing about this initiative seems a whole lot easier than the thought of actually executing it! There is a better than fighting chance my Barcalounger will be the winner at the end of the day. Wish me luck!
