The plan has been in play for the past couple of years. Upon retirement, the purchase of a new custom-fitted set of either Ping or Taylor Made irons, woods and maybe a rescue or two, thus replacing my tired, yet faithful, old Ping G5’s (born on date: June 27, 2007), sans a six iron (see Bad Golf Guy January 2019 post, “Friend’s, Friend”).
It is an exciting time! The anticipation of a personalized club fitting, dedicated time with a certified technician, Trackman data and critical decisions on shafts, lofts and grips. It all gives me goosebumps!
Things were tracking until I was a bit bored one evening and decided to peruse a number of old “Golf” magazines, specifically the July 2017 edition featuring Justin Thomas. On page 76, I discovered the following quote by The Robert Browning (noted poet and playwright, 1812-1889); “The trouble that most of us find with the modern matched set of clubs is that they don’t really seem to know any more about the game than the old ones did.”
Was this some kind of divine intervention? My clubs aren’t really in that bad of shape come to think of it, and I don’t really use my six-iron all that often, and my guess is that there is plenty of life left in the sweet spots.
I am now thinking that this plan needs to be shelved for another year or two until I get my swing squared away. Thanks Bob!

I like the rationale related to your delayed decision making, however having personally been fitted for clubs within the last 6 months I must say that I have hit the ball much better. I have added about 10-12 yards to each of my irons.
