Many years ago, in my formative golfing years, I was playing in my first Member-Guest at Lancaster Country Club (an intimidating affair) with my new boss (previously referred to in “Classis Swings” as a “serious man who is serious about his golf game”).
During the Thursday afternoon practice round, I was playing the uphill, dogleg right 15th hole when I nuked an approach shot over the 15th green onto the 11th green (which lies directly behind the 15th). As I approached the 11th green I was terrified to find five balls on the putting surface. As I attempted to sort out the mess, I approached the closest ball in proximity to the 15th green, which happened to be the closest ball to the 11th pin placement. As I entered the “embarrassment zone” there were five comedians chuckling while simultaneously propping themselves against their putter. The Don Rickles of the group suggested that my shot was just not that good, pointing to the ball the furthest from the 11th pin placement.
Just one more fabulous moment in my golfing life!
Rule 25-3 “Wrong Putting Green”:
a) Interference:
Interference by a wrong putting green occurs when a ball is on the wrong putting green.
Interference to a player’s stance or the area of his intended swing is not, of itself, interference under this rule.
b) If a player’s ball lies on a wrong putting green, he must not play the ball as it lies. He must take relief, without penalty.
If not mistaken, I believe my closest point of relief was in my pocket!
