On a trip to Maxie’s Grill and Taproom in The Village of Pinehurst, NC (see Maxie’s), I made a mental note of a barbershop in close proximity. During my initial visit to the Village Barber Shop, I found myself sitting patiently in a comfortable waiting area. The atmosphere was friendly, almost festive; reminiscent of Floyd’s Barber Shop on the Andy Griffith Show. The Shop houses two professional barber chairs, one for patrons and one for cronies who hang out and kibitz; twisting tall tales. ... continue reading...
I Have a Friend
I have a dear friend with parental superpowers. My friend, a lifelong educator/coach, has raised three accomplished children, completely on his own. This family of four functions as a cohesive unit, all recognizing their mere existence depends on one other. All three children are bright, social and are fortunate enough to be blessed with their father’s sense of humor. All three children are athletic, playing multiple sports at an advanced level, while simultaneously maintaining a near 4.0 ... continue reading...
The Country Club of York
Recently, I was fortunate to be invited by my best golfing buddy of some forty-one years to participate in a Member-Guest at the Country Club of York (CCY); an absolute gem tucked away in the rolling hills of southern York County, Pennsylvania. Country Club of York: Founded in 1899 In May of 1926, CCY chose Donald Ross and Associates to design the course. Donald Ross is arguably the most influential golf course designer in the history of the sport. He was involved in designing and ... continue reading...
Experience of a Lifetime
A few weeks after this year’s Masters tournament, I was fortunate enough to be invited to play/stay (three rounds/two nights) at Sage Valley Golf Club, in Graniteville, South Carolina; fifteen minutes northeast of Augusta, Georgia. Sage Valley opened in September 2001 and was the vision of founder Weldon Wyatt, son Tom Wyatt and renowned architect Tom Fazio. Weldon Wyatt made his fortune as the nation’s leading developer of Walmart stores. His dream was to build a course, bigger, better and ... continue reading...
Skip It! (Part 2)
On the heels of “Skip It! (Part 1)”, I promised to share my two favorite experiences of our Monday practice round at the 2024 Masters. Experience One After walking a portion of the front nine, we cut across a few fairways to locate the 16th hole (Redbud). The 16th hole is a picturesque, 170-yard par three that has changed the fate of many a Master’s contender through the years. The hole is played entirely over water and the green is secured by three bunkers. With the green significantly ... continue reading...
Skip It! (Part 1)
With special thanks to our friend Terry, the Schochs and the Barretts (Jack and Susan; neighbors and good buddies), attended the Monday practice round of the 2024 Masters tournament. It was a glorious day with temperatures in the 70’s; virtually no humidity and barely a cloud in the sky. Having entered through the North Gate, we passed the practice facilities, the charming, elegant merchandise/concession buildings followed by a massive manual scoreboard. Once past the scoreboard, we had our ... continue reading...
Phoenix Rising
As suggested in previous articles, my brother (John) has worked very hard on his game and has turned himself into a very respectable, very consistent golfer; currently carrying a 10.6 index. He is a frequent competitor in the majority of his Club’s Championship events and periodically competes in Inter-Club team events. Through it all, John has assembled a modest collection of golf related bling in his trophy case. Conversely, if memory serves me correctly, my last trophy was a “participation” ... continue reading...
